Hualien City is located on the east coast of Taiwan, on a strip of land between the Pacific Ocean and the Central Mountain Range, and is the capital of the Hualien County. Tourists visit the city for its own beauty and interest, and it is also the base for a tour to the famous Torako Gorge, just a short distance north of the city. Miyako is a small city of 60,000 people on the eastern-most coast of Honshu, Japan's main island. Kagoshima lies on the southern tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan. It is the picturesque capital of the Prefecture of the same name. Due to its active stratovolcano Sakurajima – Kagoshima's Vesuvius, seen east of the port – and its 'excitable' inhabitants, it is often compared to its Italian sister city, Naples. Nagasaki City, on the island of Kyushu in Japan, lies at the heart of Nagasaki-hanto Peninsula. As one of Japan's closest port cities to the Asian mainland, Nagasaki has played a prominent role in foreign trade relations for many centuries. Fukuoka, the capital of the Prefecture of the same name, is located on Kyushu Island in Japan, and spreads out around scenic Hakata Bay. It is an interesting city with its attractive coastlines, shrines and relics of the aborted Mongolian invasion. Surrounded by mountains and sea and an untouched natural environment, interestingly its attractions are contemporary rather than traditional, but they are still very much worth seeing. Busan (formerly Pusan), the second largest city and principal port of South Korea, is situated in the SE of the peninsula on the Korea Strait. The city has many steep hills, creating a delightful mix of mountains and ocean. While Busan was relatively untouched during the Korean War, the flood of refugees has shaped the city. Okinawa Island is the largest of a group of one hundred and fifty islands, the Ryukyu islands, scattered over a wide area in the southernmost prefecture of Japan. The city of Okinawa is second to the capital Naha, 22km to the SW. It has a separate history from the rest of Japan, having originally been an independent kingdom (Ryukyu), then under the power of China, followed by the US military which still has many occupied military bases there. Ishigaki is the largest city for the Yaeyama Island Group, and is located on Ishigaki Island, as is the area's major boat terminal, Ishigaki Port. It is the southernmost of the Ryukyu (or Nansei) Islands chain, of which the largest is Okinawa. Hong Gai – aka Halong, Hanoi – is a port city located about 160 km NE of Hanoi in Vietnam. The city lies mainly on Bai Tu Long Bay, a part of the beautiful Halong Bay. Ko Kut is an island in the Trat Sea Waters of Thailand, at the eastern-most part of the country adjacent to Cambodia. It was originally a village, but now the name encompasses a whole district in Trat Province, eastern Thailand, consisting completely of islands. Ko Samui is an island off the E coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, about 35 km NE of Surat Thani town on the mainland peninsula. Jakarta, located on the NW coast of Java at the mouth of the Ciliwung River, is the capital and largest city of Indonesia. Greater Jakarta is the eleventh largest city in the world with more than 23 million people, and like most of the big cities in the developing countries, it does suffer from urbanisation problems. Semarang, on the N coast of Java, is the capital of the Province of Central Java and one of the largest cities in Indonesia. Northern Semarang has a lot of old Dutch colonial buildings, especially in the area called The Old City. Here is found the fascinating Dutch fortress that is pentagonal in shape, and nearby the Lawang Sewu building, once a company head office for the Dutch East Indies, with an old locomotive, to name but a few of about 50 old buildings that recall the history of colonialism. Surabaya is Indonesia’s second largest city and the capital of East Java. It is located on the NE coast of Java, sheltered by the island of Madura in the Java Sea. Celukan Bawang, with its large wharf, is the main cargo port of northern Bali, trading in timber and cement from Kalimantan (Borneo) and Java. Bugis schooners, the magnificent sailing vessels that take their name from the seafaring people of Sulawesi, anchor here. What you see here is not the westernised tourist potpourri of Kuta Beach.
